Joanna makes us Swedish porridge for breakfast. We enjoy more chats over coffee and Kim has more hugs with Lewis the Irish Terrier. Maybe I need to buy her a dog. We write in their guestbook, take pictures and set off at 9am.

Ride through the old town, first to the palace which looks a bit like the palace of Versaille, but it has one more window than the famous French palace, continue on to the Rathaus (townhall). There is a market in the main square (platz) and find a coffee bean roastery hoping it will serve decent coffee... it doesn't quite live up to expectations.

There are several buildings around the city with big street art murals. We set a route to see several of them.

Steffen told us at breakfast that there will be a test of emergency sirens and messages to mobile phone. It lasts for about 5 minutes. It’s eerie! It also strikes me as the perfect time to actually launch an attack. No one would pay any notice to warnings as they would be think it is a test.

We find a park with seats to make a picnic lunch. It’s 1pm and we haven’t left the city yet!

The first 20km is a very Industrial ride. The chemical company BASF has its headquarters here with over 39,000 workers. As a result it is not particularly enjoyable.

Once we get to a river crossing on a chain ferry things start to improve. It doesn't run on a schedule you just yell out to the driver if it is on the other side and he comes over to pick you up. There is already a cyclist onboard he seems to know the driver and is sitting in a chair chatting away going back and forth with him. Although the driver does not speak any English he is quite a character, and refers to Polly and Pacman as our Ferrari. He offers to take a photo of Kim and I with our Ferrari as we cross.

The rest of the day is farmland and villages. At one we stop to buy some Day and Night tablets as Kim can’t shake her head cold.

Check into an Airbnb as Kim isn’t really up to camping tonight. It is in a converted attic of a house. We need to go through the owners kitchen to get in and out of the house. No problem we don't intent to leave until tomorrow morning.

Spend the evening resting and reading. Kim manages to call her dad before his surgery. Dave is cool as a cucumber but Val is a bit nervous. Val will call us tomorrow morning when Dave out of surgery.
