Altenburg - rest day

Enjoy a leisurely morning reading and having several coffees before we wander to the local store for a few more provisions. We both need this rest day. The one extra day camping was not enough to recover from the climb over the Alps and the heat wave through Switzerland.

It rains all day so we rest, read, nap, eat and most importantly wash every piece of clothing we have. We have a washing machine. Yay!

Tuesday 29 - Altenburg - Rhine Falls - Jestetten

Slow morning. It's grey and drizzling outside. We don’t want to leave our cosy Airbnb cocoon.

At 11:30am we walk along the river to the Rhine falls. It's about 5km away. The leaves are already starting to change colour and lots have also fallen. Not sure if this means a quick or early Autumn?!! Regardless we enjoy listening to the crushing of the leaves under our feet.

Even in the drizzle there are lots of tourists walking about. More than we have seen in weeks. There are several boats on the river taking turns getting close to the falls. We can see the spray - they must be getting saturated!
The Rhine Falls are 150 meters wide, 23 meters high with 600 m³ of water plunge over the falls in the height of summer. Add to that they are about 13,000-17,000 years old. We think that it is the schloss's next to the falls that help make the site impressive. One is built just below the falls with great views of the water rushing over toward it. The other sits on the hill above looking over it. It even has a train tunnel under it! For us to get to the Schloss on the hill we walk across the railway bridge just on the high side of the falls.
Walk home on the other side of the river and continue to Jestetten for food. The first place we find open we go into. It’s Italian but has a mixed menu. It will do. I order the lasagne and Kim has schnitzel. She wants something different from pizza and pasta and it’s too cold for salad. Wash them down with a local beer. The restaurant is nice enough. The food is good, not amazing. But we are the only diners and there is no music or ambiance - a little eerie!
When we get up to leave it’s raining harder than when we arrived. Rain jackets and overpants on. Walk 500m to Aldi to buy food for dinner. It's so nice to have a kitchen to cook in. We walk the 5km home and through our whole village. It’s really pretty, but barely any signs of life! By the time we get home the rain has stopped but we are wet and tired. Hot shower to warm us up and then we close the curtains, put on a movie and relax.
Not exactly a rest day - probably walked 20km.
